Lower Antelope Canyon -Arizona

Lower antelope canyon is a slot canyon in Page, AZ. There is an upper and lower portion to Antelope Canyon. The Upper is more popular for its light beams that can be seen when the sun hits the canyon just right, but requires a shuttle bus to get there. We chose to do Lower Antelope Canyon because of how easy it was to get to and because it is generally less crowded. It did not disappoint and should definitely be a stop on any trip through this part of the country.IMG_4269IMG_4243IMG_4271IMG_2701lower antelopeIMG_4296

Experiencing Lower Antelope Canyon:
  • The canyon is only accessible through guided tours. There are two touring outfits available and are located right next to each other: Kens Tours and Dixie Ellis Tours. You can input either into google maps to direct you there or enter Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park, Page, AZ.
  • We did Ken’s Tours. They leave every 20 minutes during summer with the last tour departing at 4pm. You can buy tickets when you arrive. We had no problem getting on the next tour, but you can also reserve online in advance and may want to call ahead just to be sure they are not booked up.
  • The tour leaves straight from the parking lot/check-in & ticket building. There is about a 10 minute walk to the entrance of the canyon. Then you enter the canyon down a set of man made stairs.
  • Each guide has a group of about 10 people. The guide will take photos for your group, point out cool features and keep you on track. There is no climbing on the walls and the next group will be close behind, but we never felt too rushed.
  • The tour last 1 hour in the canyon then another 15-20min getting to and from the check-in area.
  • This is not a strenuous hike at all. It is a leisurely guided walk with one set of steel stairs into the canyon and another set of stairs to get out.
  • If you are a serious photographer you may want to opt for the photo tour also provided by Ken’s Tours. This allows you to bring a tripod into the canyon and take your time (last 2hrs & 15min). The photo tours are not available in summer during peak season (March – November).

Exiting the canyon. From above it looks like a crack in the ground, but once you get down in the canyon the tall walls beaming with light are a marvel to see.
